Organ Grinder Press - interviews and reviews
The Mules: Angry Ape webzine review of 'Grab Your Musket'.
Apr 16, 2005 |
Oxford’s The Mules may well have a name that resembles yet another batch processed garage act, but they take things a little further with their multi diverse and ever changing tracks. Their intention can be pin-pointed to two things; to combine as many musical genres as possible into the perfect three minute pop track, as well as aiming to make the listener dance. ‘Grab Your Musket’, the band’s debut release for Organ Grinder achieves exactly both those ambitions of the course of 6 tracks and 18 minutes. The band skips between 70’s shambolic garage and punk (The Prefects, The Clash), danceable funk as well as the influence of both PiL and more recently The Rapture, which can be heard throughout. But what makes The Mules stand out from the crowd is not only their inclusion of various, random instruments but their killer rhythm section, that guarantees to fill any empty dance floor.
