Last, but not least, is It's A Wide, Wide Sea, the new release by the Jersey based Fireworks Night. This is the album that Woodbine would have liked to have made if they were not such a bunch of talentless tossers. This is an odd, compelling, effortlessly mellow record written by James Lesslie and beautifully sung with co-vocalist Briony Greenhill with a lo-fi skeletal backing of mainly just guitar or piano and the occasional bubbling electronica. It's a strange record that takes you into far out, country tinged, devastated torch singing territory with a nod to the likes of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and laughing Len Cohen. The whole record is heartbreakingly soulful. The best track is the stunning title track with just electric piano, treated guitar and FX backing the plaintive, intertwining voices of James Lesslie and Briony Greenhill. Originally conceived by Lesslie as a studio based project, Fireworks Night have now morphed into a proper band and are now playing live.
